Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
